What Is This Tool?

Alternate & Mix Pages combines two PDFs by weaving their pages together instead of simply placing one file after the other. Choose to alternate page by page, put all of one file then the other, pair pages up, or type your own A/B pattern — then fine-tune the result in a live page grid before you download.

It is designed for scanners without a duplex feeder. Scan all the fronts, flip the stack, scan all the backs, and this tool weaves the two files into a single document in the right reading order. If the backs came out in reverse, tick the option to reverse the second file first.

When to Use It

  • Rebuild a double-sided document scanned in two passes
  • Weave together the odd and even pages that were separated earlier
  • Alternate pages from two documents, for example a question sheet and its answer sheet
  • Mix a document with a set of separator or divider pages

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Upload the first PDF (A) and the second PDF (B).

2

Pick a mixing pattern, or type a custom one like ABBA.

3

Drag, rotate, duplicate or delete any page in the grid.

4

Click "Combine & Download" and get your file.

Tips

  • Fronts and backs scanned in the same direction? Leave the reverse options off
  • Flipped the stack over and scanned the backs? Turn Reverse PDF B on
  • Backs upside down after mixing? Select them in the grid and press Rotate 90°

Troubleshooting

Problem: The pages are in the wrong order

Solution: Turn on Reverse PDF A or Reverse PDF B under Advanced options, rebuild the page list, and check the live "Output order" preview.

Problem: One file has more pages than the other

Solution: Choose "Append the rest" to add the extra pages at the end, or "Stop at the shorter file" to leave them out.

Problem: My file will not upload

Solution: Confirm both are real PDFs under 50 MB. Unlock password-protected files first with Unlock PDF.

Alternate & Mix Pages FAQ

How does the mixing order work?

Pick Alternate, A-then-B, B-then-A, Pair pages, or type a custom A/B pattern. The result is shown as a live page grid you can still edit by hand before downloading.

What if the files have different page counts?

Choose whether the longer file's extra pages are appended at the end or left out once the shorter file ends.

Can I mix more than two files?

Not in one step. Mix two files, then use the result as PDF A for the next run.

How is this different from Merge PDF?

Merge PDF places whole files one after another. This tool weaves them page by page, and lets you edit the mixed result before downloading.

Are my files kept?

No. Your uploads and the result are deleted automatically a short time after processing.

Your files are handled securely

Uploads are transferred over an encrypted connection and processed in an isolated job folder. Your original files are never modified — the result is always a new, separate file.
