What Is This Tool?

Flatten PDF takes the interactive layer of a PDF — fillable form fields such as text boxes, checkboxes and dropdowns — and merges each field's current value into the page itself as ordinary, fixed content. It also removes leftover link and pop-up annotations. After flattening, the file looks the same but nothing on it can be typed into, ticked, or clicked.

This is useful when you have filled in a form and want to send a version that no one can accidentally (or deliberately) change, or when a form does not display correctly in some viewers because they render form fields differently. It is not an image conversion: the text on the page stays selectable and searchable.

Why Flatten a PDF?

An unflattened form can be re-edited by anyone who opens it, and some apps and printers render form fields with the wrong font, a grey background, or not at all. Flattening locks the content in place and makes the file render consistently everywhere.

What flattening gives you

  • Form answers that can't be changed after you send them
  • Consistent appearance across viewers and printers
  • No stray clickable links or comment pop-ups
  • Selectable, searchable text is preserved

Who Uses It

  • Anyone returning a completed application or tax form
  • HR and admin teams archiving signed forms
  • Anyone whose filled form looks wrong in a colleague's PDF viewer
  • Designers sending proofs with no clickable links

A few real-world examples

  • A job applicant fills a PDF form, flattens it, and emails it so the employer receives fixed answers.
  • An HR team flattens every returned onboarding form before adding it to the employee record.
  • A user whose checkbox values vanish when printing flattens the form so the ticks always show.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Upload your PDF.

2

Click "Flatten PDF".

3

Download the flattened file.

What You'll Get

A new PDF where form fields have been converted to static content and link/pop-up annotations removed. The result screen shows how many fields were flattened and how many annotations were removed. If the file has no form fields and no such annotations, the tool tells you it is already static rather than producing an identical copy.

Features

  • Free, no registration, no watermark
  • Flattens AcroForm text fields, checkboxes and dropdowns
  • Removes link and pop-up annotations
  • Keeps text selectable and searchable
  • Reports what it changed

Supported Formats

PDF (with form fields) PDF (flattened)

Tips

  • Fill the form completely before flattening — you can't edit fields afterwards
  • Keep an unflattened copy in case you need to change an answer later
  • Flattening does not add a digital signature — use Protect PDF if you also need a password
  • To make a truly uneditable image-only file, run Grayscale PDF or convert to images afterwards

Troubleshooting

Problem: "This PDF has no interactive form fields or annotations to flatten"

Solution: The file is already a static document — there is nothing to flatten. This message means the tool made no change rather than handing back an identical copy.

Problem: A field's text moved or changed font after flattening

Solution: Flattening bakes in the field's own appearance. If the form used an unusual font or auto-sizing, the fixed version may look slightly different. Compare against the original and re-fill if needed before flattening again.

Problem: I still need to edit the form

Solution: Use your unflattened copy. A flattened PDF cannot be turned back into a fillable form here.

Problem: My file won't upload

Solution: Confirm it is a real PDF under 50 MB. If it is password-protected, remove the password first with Unlock PDF.

Flatten PDF FAQ

Is Flatten PDF free?

Yes. Flattening is completely free, with no sign-up, watermark or hidden limits beyond the 50 MB file size.

Does flattening turn my PDF into an image?

No. Only the interactive layer is merged into the page. Regular page text stays selectable and searchable.

Can a flattened form still be edited?

The form fields are gone, so they cannot be filled in or changed. Someone could still annotate the page in a separate editor, but the answers you flattened are fixed.

Will it remove my page content or images?

No. Page text, images and vector graphics are left untouched. Only form fields and link/pop-up annotations are affected.

Does it work on XFA / LiveCycle forms?

It flattens standard AcroForm fields. Older dynamic XFA forms may not flatten fully — check the result and keep your original.

Are my files kept?

No. Your upload and the result are both deleted automatically a short time after processing.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, in any modern mobile or desktop browser — no app required.

Privacy & Security

Your files are handled securely

Filled forms often contain personal details, so this matters here. All uploads are transferred over an encrypted SSL/TLS connection and processed in an isolated job folder. No one at PDFCherry views, shares, or uses the content of your documents for anything other than flattening them.

  • Uploaded files are automatically deleted within 30 minutes.
  • The flattened PDF is automatically deleted within 1 hour after completion.
  • Your original file is never modified — the result is always a new, separate file.

Read our full Privacy Policy or Contact Us if you have any questions about how your files are handled.

Why Trust PDFCherry?
