What Is Deskew PDF?

Deskew PDF straightens pages that were scanned or photographed at a slight angle. Each page is rendered at a low resolution, the direction of its text lines is measured, and tilted pages are rotated back into line.

Because the page is rotated rather than re-drawn as a picture, the text of a searchable scan stays searchable and images stay sharp. The result screen lists which pages were straightened and by how much. Pages that are already straight, or have too little content to measure, are left exactly as they were.

When to Use It

  • Fix a stack of documents that went through the scanner at a slight angle
  • Straighten pages photographed with a phone
  • Tidy a PDF before cropping, printing or archiving
  • Straighten only the few pages that are crooked
  • Prepare scans before running text recognition elsewhere

Tips

  • Use Custom Pages if only some pages are crooked
  • Sideways or upside-down pages need Rotate PDF
  • To trim the borders afterwards, use Crop PDF

Troubleshooting

Problem: A page was not straightened

Solution: It may be too empty to measure, or its tilt was under your sensitivity setting. Try Sensitive, or raise the largest correction.

Problem: The corner of a page is cut off

Solution: Tick Shrink slightly so corners are not cut off.

Problem: A page got worse

Solution: Photos and drawings with strong diagonal lines can fool the measurement. Run it again from your original with Custom Pages that leave that page out.

Problem: My file will not upload

Solution: Confirm it is a real PDF under 50 MB. Unlock password-protected files first with Unlock PDF.

Deskew PDF FAQ

Does deskewing turn my pages into images?

No. Pages are rotated, not re-drawn, so searchable text stays searchable and images stay sharp.

How does it know how much to rotate?

It measures the direction of the text lines on each page and rotates by the opposite amount.

Can it fix upside-down or sideways pages?

No. Deskew fixes small tilts. Use Rotate PDF for 90 or 180 degree turns.

What is the largest tilt it can fix?

You can set up to 15 degrees. Larger tilts are not corrected.

Why were some pages skipped?

Blank pages and pages with very little content cannot be measured reliably, so they are copied through unchanged.

Are my files kept?

No. Your uploads and the result are deleted automatically a short time after processing.

Your files are handled securely
