PDF metadata is the set of document properties stored inside the file: the title, author, subject, and keywords, plus the software that created it. Readers show these in a "Document properties" or "Details" panel, and search tools and document management systems use them to index files.

Steps to edit PDF metadata on PDFCherry: upload the file, edit the title, author and keywords, apply, then download.
The steps covered in this guide.

How to edit PDF metadata

  1. Open the Edit PDF Metadata tool and upload your PDF.
  2. Fill in the Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords fields.
  3. Optionally tick Remove Creator and Producer to strip the names of the software used to make the file.
  4. Save and download the updated PDF.

Important: a field you leave blank is saved as blank. Fill in every field you want to keep, including ones that already had a value.

Why bother

  • A proper title is what many readers and search results display instead of the file name.
  • A consistent author across a batch of invoices or reports makes them easy to find later.
  • Keywords and a subject help document systems and search index the file.
  • Removing the creator and producer hides which internal software generated the document.

What this tool does not change

Editing metadata does not touch the visible content of the pages, and it does not currently change the creation or modification dates. To black out visible content, use Redact PDF.
