Quick Answer
How do I remove a watermark from a PDF online? Open the Remove Watermark from PDF tool and upload the PDF. The inspection lists every watermark it can separate from the page, with a confidence level. Tick the one you want gone, select Remove & preview, drag the before/after slider to check the result, then download yourfile-no-watermark.pdf.
What if nothing is found? Type the watermark’s exact words into Find by text. If the PDF is a scan, the watermark is part of the picture: use Mark an area to replace that area with the background colour, knowing that everything inside the box is replaced.
Only for documents you own or may edit. Removing a watermark from your own draft or from a stamp you added yourself is fine. Removing a copyright or ownership watermark from someone else’s work may violate copyright law, and removing it doesn’t change who owns the document or what its licence allows.
Why PDFs End Up With Watermarks You Don’t Want
Most unwanted watermarks are leftovers. A report was stamped DRAFT while it was being reviewed and is now final. A contract carried a CONFIDENTIAL mark that no longer applies. An accounting or reporting program printed its name on every exported page. A company rebranded and its old logo still sits on every template.
Going back to the source file is not always possible: the Word document is lost, or the PDF came out of a system you no longer use. That is where you remove the watermark from the PDF online instead: no software to install, and the rest of the page stays as it was.
How to Use the Online PDF Watermark Remover
Step 1: Upload your PDF
Open the PDF watermark remover and drop your file on the box, select Upload PDF, or import it from Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. A progress bar shows the upload, then the message “Checking annotations, marked content, layers, text and images on every page”. This usually takes a few seconds; long documents take longer, and you can cancel at any time.
If the PDF has a password, a password box appears instead. Enter the password you were given; it is used only while you work on this PDF and is never stored.
Step 2: Check what was found and choose what to remove
The Inspection summary lists every possible watermark, for example Text “DRAFT” or Image drawn over the page, with the pages it appears on and a confidence level:
- High confidence: the PDF labels it as a watermark, or several strong signs agree (tilted, see-through, repeated on every page). Ticked for you.
- Medium or low confidence: it looks like a watermark but could be real content, such as a footer or a logo you want to keep. Not ticked; check the preview first.
Found several things? Use Remove by type to tick them in one click: Everything found, Text only, Images & logos only, Diagonal stamps or Labelled watermarks (the ones the PDF itself marks as a watermark). You can still tick or untick single items afterwards.
Not listed? Type the exact words into Find by text and select Find. On a scanned page, select Mark an area… and drag a box over the watermark. Then choose All pages, Selected pages or a Page range such as 1-5, 8, and select Remove & preview.
Step 3: Compare, check and download
The result opens on the first changed page with a before/after slider; switch to Side by side if you prefer. Under it, Document checks tell you whether the page count is unchanged, whether other text, images, links, comments and form fields were kept, and whether the watermark text is still in the file. Page by page lists what happened on each page.
Happy with it? Tick I own this document or have the right to edit it (asked once) and select Download PDF. The file is saved as yourfile-no-watermark.pdf. Not happy? Select Undo & change choices or Try another method; your original is still untouched.
Want to keep working on it? The cards under What do you want to do next? open the clean copy straight in Compress PDF, Add Watermark, Flatten PDF, Merge PDF, PDF to JPG or PDF to Text, with no second upload. See what to do next.
What You Can Expect at Each Step
- When you land: the upload box first, with the limits (one PDF, 50 MB, 500 pages) and how your file is handled, before you send anything.
- After the upload: a list of what was found, with confidence levels and page numbers, instead of a blind “remove” button.
- Before anything changes: a removal plan that sums up your choices. Digitally signed PDFs and marked areas need an extra confirmation, because both change more than the watermark.
- While it works: “Removing and checking…”. A copy of your PDF is changed, then compared with the original page by page.
- When it finishes: an honest headline, for example “Removal completed: visible change confirmed on 3 pages”, or a clear warning if the change was partial or nothing could be removed.
- Next: download, undo, try another method, delete your files at once, or continue with Compress PDF, Merge PDF or the PDF editor.
Key Features and Benefits
- Formatting is preserved. Only the watermark object is taken out; pages are not turned into images, so fonts, vector graphics, links and bookmarks stay as they were. The document checks confirm it.
- You see before you remove. Every finding comes with a confidence level, and nothing uncertain is ticked for you.
- Three ways to find a watermark: automatic detection, Find by text, and Mark an area for scans.
- Selective by page: all pages, the pages you click, or a range.
- Selective by type: text only, images and logos only, diagonal stamps, or watermarks the PDF labels as such.
- No re-uploading: send the clean copy to the next tool, save it to Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, share it, or copy a download link.
- Private handling: sent over HTTPS, processed on PDFCherry’s own server, never sent to third parties, and deleted when you select Delete my files now or automatically within 60 minutes.
- Free, no sign-up, nothing to install, on a computer or a phone.
What the tool doesn’t do. Being clear about this saves you time:
- No batch mode. One PDF at a time: when one file is done, select Process another PDF. Each file gets its own inspection, because two PDFs with the same visible stamp can store it in completely different ways.
- No AI repainting. Nothing is invented to fill the space a watermark leaves. Removed objects leave the real page underneath; a cleaned area on a scan is filled with the surrounding background colour or white.
- Not processed in your browser. Inspection and removal run on PDFCherry’s own server, and your files are deleted within 60 minutes.
Which Watermarks Can Be Removed?
Whether a watermark can come off cleanly depends on how the PDF stores it, not on how it looks.
| How the watermark is stored | What happens |
|---|---|
| A watermark annotation | Removed cleanly; other comments, links and form fields stay. |
| Content the PDF labels as a watermark (for example Acrobat’s “Add Watermark”) | Removed cleanly; only the labelled content goes. |
| A layer named like a watermark | Removed from the pages you choose. A layer can hold more than the watermark, so check the preview. |
| Separate text, such as a tilted see-through “DRAFT” | Detected by its signs, or found by your search. Only that text is removed. |
| A separate image, such as a see-through logo | Detected the same way. Only that image is removed. |
| Part of a scanned page | Can’t be lifted off. You can replace a marked area with the background; everything in the box is replaced. |
| Drawn as shapes, or merged into the page drawing | Can’t be told apart from the page reliably, so it is left alone and the page explains why. |
Advanced Tips for Complex Logos and Semi-Transparent Stamps
Most watermarks come off with one click. These are the cases that need a little more care.
Semi-transparent stamps
Transparency is one of the strongest signs of a watermark, so a see-through DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL is usually listed with high confidence and ticked for you. Because the stamp object itself is removed rather than painted over, the text underneath keeps its original quality and stays selectable.
Logos you want to keep
A company logo in the header and a logo watermark across the page can both be images. Logos get a medium confidence unless several signs agree, so they are not ticked for you. Use Show on page to see exactly which picture an item is before you tick it, or choose Images & logos only and untick the one you want to keep.
Watermarks drawn several ways
Some PDFs carry the same watermark as text on some pages and as an image on others. Choose Everything found, check the page-by-page report, and if the result says the watermark text is still in the file, select Try another method and search for it by text.
Watermarks only on some pages
Choose Page range and type, for example, 1-5, 8. Pages you leave out are copied exactly as they were.
Deeply embedded or vector watermark? If Find by text says the words aren’t in the PDF as text, the watermark is drawn as shapes or part of an image. On a scan, use Mark an area… and drag a tight box over it. For shapes, removing it in the source document and exporting a new PDF is the only clean fix.
Scanned pages
Draw the box as tight as you can, and use Same spot on every selected scanned page when the stamp sits in the same place throughout. Everything inside the box is replaced, so check that it doesn’t cover a signature or a line of text.
Common Issues and Quick Fixes
“This PDF is password-protected.”
Enter its password in the box that appears. If you see “Changes to this PDF are restricted by its owner”, you need the permissions (owner) password; the tool never bypasses passwords or permission settings. The clean copy is protected again with the same password. You can also remove a password you know first with Unlock PDF.
“This PDF is too large” or “has too many pages”
The limit is 50 MB and 500 pages. Split the PDF and process the part with the watermark, or compress it first.
“This file isn’t a PDF we can read.”
The file is another type renamed to .pdf, such as an image or a Word document. Convert it first, for example with JPG to PDF.
“This PDF appears to be damaged.”
The file couldn’t be read completely, so the tool stops rather than risk changing it. Run it through Repair PDF, then try again.
The watermark is part of a scan (hard-coded background stamp)
The page says “This PDF is made of scanned pages, so a watermark would be part of the picture.” Use Mark an area to replace the watermark area with the surrounding background colour or white. Keep the box tight: text or signatures inside it are erased too, and text under the watermark can’t be recreated.
The watermark is drawn as vector shapes
Find by text answers “This exact text isn’t in the PDF as text. The watermark may be drawn as shapes or be part of an image.” Shapes can’t be told apart from the rest of the drawing safely, so the dependable fix is to remove the watermark in the original document and export a new PDF.
No removable watermark was identified
Try Find by text with the exact words, check whether the pages are scans, and read the explanation under the summary: it says why nothing was found and what you can try.
The watermark is still there after removal
The same watermark may be drawn more than one way, or sit on pages you didn’t select. The result says when its text is still in the file. Select Try another method, tick the other items found, or search by text.
Something else disappeared
The document checks warn you. Select Undo & change choices and untick the item that took too much, often a layer that held more than the watermark.
“Encrypted or unsupported PDF.”
The PDF uses protection that can’t be opened safely, such as certificate security. Open it in the program that protected it and save an unencrypted copy, or print it to a new PDF, then upload that copy.
“This took too long.”
Very long or image-heavy documents can hit the time limit. Choose a Page range with fewer pages, or split the PDF and process the part with the watermark.
“The connection was interrupted.”
Check your internet connection and try again. Your original file is not affected. If the page says “This PDF is no longer on our server”, it was deleted automatically after the time limit: upload it again.
What to Do After Removing the Watermark
After you confirm the document is yours, the clean copy can go straight on to the next job, with no second upload:
- Compress PDF when the file is too large to email.
- Add your own watermark, for example to re-stamp it CONFIDENTIAL or with your own brand.
- Flatten PDF to lock form fields and layers into the page.
- Merge PDF to combine it with other documents.
- PDF to JPG or PDF to Text to reuse the pages or their text.
You can also save the clean copy to Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, share it from your device, or copy its download link. The link stops working when your files are deleted, at most 60 minutes later.
Privacy and Your Original File
- Your PDF is sent over HTTPS and processed on PDFCherry’s own server, not by a third-party service.
- Your original is never changed. Each attempt writes a new copy.
- Select Delete my files now to delete the PDF, copies and previews at once; otherwise they are deleted automatically within 60 minutes.
- Passwords are kept only in server memory while you work on that PDF, never written to disk or logged.
- No account is needed. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to remove watermarks online?
With this tool, the PDF is sent over an encrypted connection, processed on PDFCherry’s own server, never shared with third parties, and deleted when you ask or automatically within 60 minutes. Your original file is never changed. As with any online service, avoid uploading documents you are not allowed to share.
Will removing a watermark affect the original text or layout?
When the watermark is stored as its own object, no: only that object is removed and the page is not re-rendered. The document checks confirm whether any other text, image, link, comment or form field changed. Cleaning a marked area on a scan is different: everything inside the box is replaced.
Can I remove image logos as well as text watermarks?
Yes, when the logo is a separate image, for example a see-through logo drawn over the page. It is listed as an image with a confidence level. A logo that is part of a scanned page can only be cleaned by marking its area.
Is the online PDF watermark remover free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and it adds no watermark of its own to the result.
Can I remove a watermark from a scanned PDF?
Not as a separate object, because it is part of the picture. You can mark the area and have its pixels replaced with the background colour; anything else in that area is erased too.
Can I remove watermarks from several PDFs at once?
No, one PDF at a time. When you are done, select Process another PDF.
Can I remove a watermark from a password-protected PDF?
Yes, if you know the password. PDFs whose owner restricted changes need the permissions password. The tool never bypasses encryption or permissions, and the clean copy is protected again.
How do I remove a semi-transparent stamp from a PDF without losing quality?
Upload the PDF and tick the stamp in the inspection; semi-transparent stamps are usually found with high confidence. The stamp object is removed instead of being painted over, and pages aren’t turned into images, so text stays sharp and selectable.
Does the tool use AI to fill in what was under the watermark?
No. Removing a watermark object reveals the real page underneath, so nothing needs to be invented. On a scan, a cleaned area is filled with the surrounding background colour or white; text that was hidden under the watermark can’t be recreated.
Can I send the clean PDF to another tool without uploading it again?
Yes. After removal, the cards under What do you want to do next? open the clean copy in Compress PDF, Add Watermark, Flatten PDF, Merge PDF, PDF to JPG or PDF to Text.
Is it legal to remove a watermark from a PDF?
It is when the document is yours or you have permission to change it. Removing a copyright or ownership watermark from someone else’s work may violate copyright law.
Summary
To remove a watermark from a PDF online, upload it, check what the inspection found, tick the watermark or search for its text, compare before and after, and download the clean copy. Watermarks stored as their own objects come off without touching the rest of the page; watermarks baked into a scan can only be painted over by area, and the tool tells you which case you have.
