You need to change one line in a PDF, sign a contract or remove a page. The first site you try adds a watermark, the next asks for an account just before the download, and the third wants your file on its server. A good free online PDF editor should do none of that.
This guide shows how to edit a PDF online free with the PDFCherry PDF Editor: add text, signatures, images, links, notes and highlights, fill in forms, redact, and crop, rotate, reorder or delete pages. It runs in your browser and your original file is never changed. It also explains what the editor can’t do, because knowing the limits before you start saves time. Only edit PDFs you have permission to edit.
Edit Your PDF Now
- Open your PDF by dropping it on the box.
- Pick a tool on the left and click or drag on the page.
- Select Save & download, compare before and after, then download.
Free, with no account and no watermark. Your PDF stays in your browser unless you choose Compress or Password, and both ask first.
Quick Answer
How do I edit a PDF online free, without a watermark or signup? Open the PDF Editor, choose your file, make your changes and select Save & download. The saved copy is reopened and checked, you compare it with the original, and you download yourfile-edited.pdf. Your original file isn’t touched.
Why Many “Free” PDF Editors Aren’t Really Free
Many tools advertised as a free online PDF editor have a catch, and it usually appears at the end, after you have done the work:
- Watermarks: the edit is free, but the download carries the site’s logo unless you pay.
- Signups: an account is required to download. Adobe’s own free online editor, for example, asks you to sign in to download or share your file.
- Uploads: your contract or tax form sits on someone else’s server, often with no clear statement of when it is deleted.
- Silent failures: the tool shows an edit on screen that never reaches the file, or a black box that leaves the text underneath readable.
What a Genuinely Free PDF Editor Should Do
Use this checklist on any free online PDF editor, including this one. A quick test with an unimportant file answers most of it.
- ✓ Downloads carry no watermark and no logo.
- ✓ No account is needed, even at the download step.
- ✓ It says plainly where your file is processed and when it is deleted.
- ✓ Your original is left alone, and edits go to a new file.
- ✓ You can see the result before you download it, with undo along the way.
- ✓ Redaction removes the content instead of covering it.
- ✓ It tells you what went wrong, and what to try next, when a file can’t be edited.
How to Edit a PDF Online: Three Methods Compared
PDF was designed to look the same everywhere, and it is now an open standard (ISO 32000-2, which the PDF Association offers as a free download). It wasn’t designed to be rewritten like a Word file, so tools differ in how deeply they can change it.
| PDFCherry (browser) | Adobe Acrobat | Other installed editors | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Free online tools; paid plans for more | Varies |
| Account | None | Sign-in to download from the free online editor | Usually none |
| Where the file goes | Stays in your browser, except Compress and Password | Your computer, or Adobe’s cloud online | Your computer |
| Existing text | Covers it and writes on top in a matched font | Edits it directly in Acrobat Pro | Varies |
| Permanent redaction | Yes; the page becomes an image | Yes, in Acrobat Pro | Varies |
| Certificate signatures | No; a picture of your signature | Yes | Varies |
| Best for | Quick, private edits on any device, which is where a free online PDF editor shines | Heavy text rewrites and formal signing | Offline work |

How to Edit a PDF Online, Step by Step
- Open your PDF. Go to the PDF Editor and drop the file on the box, or select Choose PDF file. A summary tells you if any pages look scanned, and whether the PDF has form fields or a digital signature.
- Pick a tool. Every tool is listed down the left of the window, grouped as Text, Mark up, Shapes, Insert, Forms, Pages and Whole document.
- Edit on the page. Click or drag on the page, then adjust size, colour and position in the side panel. Undo and redo are always available.
- Save and check. Select Save & download. The new file is reopened and tested, and the results are listed with a before-and-after view of each page.
- Download your copy. Select Download PDF to get yourfile-edited.pdf, or choose Keep editing to change something first.
Feature-by-Feature Walkthrough
Here is what each tool in this free online PDF editor does, and how it is saved.
Add or change text
Add text places a new text box anywhere. Edit text changes existing words: drag over them, and the editor matches the font, size and colour as closely as it can. The original font often can’t be reused, so it picks the nearest standard font, or you can upload a TTF or OTF file for an exact match. The old words are covered, not deleted, so they remain in the file underneath. Find replaces a word on every page.
Sign a PDF
Select Sign, then draw, type or upload your signature, and place it on the page. No printing or scanning is needed. This is a picture of your signature. A certificate-based signature also proves who signed and shows later changes, so check which kind your document requires.
Fill in forms
Select Forms to complete the PDF’s own text boxes, checkboxes, drop-downs and radio buttons. Values are saved in the fields, which stay fillable. If the panel says there are no fillable fields, use Add text to write on the page instead.
Highlight, comment and link
Highlight, underline, strike through, draw or add shapes in any colour. Note adds a real PDF comment that others can open. Link makes an area clickable, leading to a website, an email address or another page.
Redact sensitive information
Select Redact (or press R) and drag over what must go. When you save, each page with a redaction is rebuilt as an image with those areas blacked out, and the check confirms that page has no extractable text. The rest of that page becomes an image too, and it loses its own links, comments and form fields. Redaction doesn’t cover hidden details, so use Remove PDF Metadata and Clean PDF as well. To search for terms across many pages, try Redact PDF.
Whiteout and black boxes are not redaction. They only hide content, and the text can still be copied from the file. Use Redact whenever the information must be gone.
Add watermarks, headers and page numbers
Watermark adds text at any size, colour, opacity and angle, once or repeated, on all or some pages. Headers & numbers offers six positions with {page}, {total} and {date}. Both can be changed or removed until you download. For a logo watermark, use Image Watermark.
Crop, insert, rotate, reorder or delete pages
Drag thumbnails to reorder pages. Pages rotates, duplicates, moves, deletes and extracts them, one at a time or by range, and inserts blank pages or pages from another PDF. Crop keeps the part you choose on one page or all of them. Cropping hides the rest rather than deleting it, so redact anything that must not be recoverable.
The 10 Most Common PDF Editing Mistakes
- Using a black box to hide private data. Use Redact, which removes it.
- Trusting Edit text to remove words. They stay underneath, so redact anything confidential.
- Adding page numbers too early. Reorder and delete pages first, though the editor does number the final order.
- Expecting a scan to behave like text. A scanned page is a picture; add text on top or use Read scan.
- Treating a drawn signature as a digital one. Check what the recipient requires.
- Editing a digitally signed PDF. The signature won’t be valid in the edited copy. Your original keeps it.
- Skipping the before-and-after view. It takes seconds and is drawn from the saved file.
- Forgetting hidden details. Author names and other properties survive edits; clear them with Remove PDF Metadata.
- Cropping to hide something. Cropped content can be brought back.
- Sharing without protection. Compress first if the file is large, then add a password last with Protect PDF.
Errors You Might Hit, and Exactly How to Fix Each
When a free online PDF editor can’t do something, it should say why. These are the messages this one shows, and your original is safe in every case.
“This PDF requires a password.”
It is encrypted and can’t be edited here. If you know the password, remove it with Unlock PDF, edit the copy, then add one again with Protect PDF. We don’t bypass protection.
“This PDF uses protection that this editor cannot currently process.”
It opens, but the owner restricted editing. Use an editable copy or, if you have the password, remove it with Unlock PDF first.
“This PDF appears to be damaged.” or “This file doesn’t appear to be a valid PDF.”
The file is incomplete or is another type renamed to .pdf. Try Repair PDF, download it again, or export it again from the program that made it.
“This document is too large for the current processing method.”
Your browser ran out of memory. Close other tabs, use a computer, or split the PDF, edit the part you need and merge it back.
“This PDF is digitally signed.”
This is a warning, not a block. Saving any change means the signature won’t be valid in the edited copy. If the signature matters, keep the original and ask the signer for a new version.
“A font for your text couldn’t be loaded.”
Some characters need a font that couldn’t be downloaded, usually because of the connection or a content blocker. Your edits are still open, so reconnect and try again.
“Your changes could not be exported.” or “The saved PDF didn’t pass our checks.”
Nothing is lost, and a file that fails its checks isn’t offered for download. Try again; if it keeps failing, remove your last edit or repair the PDF and redo the edits.
“Text recognition couldn’t run.”
The recognition engine didn’t load, or memory ran out. Try again, or use PDF to Text, which can also read scanned pages.
Advanced Next Steps
- Read a scan: Read scan recognises the words on a page so you can copy them or add them as a text box. Check the output, because OCR makes mistakes.
- Compress: shrink the file with Compress PDF, or from inside the editor.
- Protect: add a password with Protect PDF as your last step.
- Convert: save pages with PDF to JPG or pull out the words with PDF to Text.
- Combine or divide: use Merge PDF and Split PDF. Both are also inside the editor, with your edits included.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this PDF editor really free?
Yes. It is a free online PDF editor with no paid tier: every tool is free, with no download limit.
Does it add a watermark?
No. It adds only what you place on the page.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is no sign-up of any kind.
Can I edit a scanned PDF?
Partly. In this free online PDF editor you can add text, notes, highlights, images and signatures on top, and OCR can read the words for you to copy. The scanned words themselves can’t be changed.
Can I edit a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. If you know the password, remove it with Unlock PDF, edit the copy, then protect it again.
Can I sign a PDF?
Yes. Draw, type or upload your signature and place it. It is a picture of your signature, not a certificate-based digital signature.
Can I redact text permanently?
Yes. Redact rebuilds the page as an image without the marked content, and the saved file is checked for leftover text on that page. Hidden details such as metadata need a separate step.
Can I reorder pages?
Yes. Drag the thumbnails, or use Move up and Move down in the Pages tool.
Can I add page numbers?
Yes. Headers & numbers adds them to all or some pages, numbered in the final page order.
Can I fill in forms?
Yes, if the PDF has fillable fields, and they stay fillable. Otherwise, use Add text to write on the page.
Will my original PDF be modified?
No. The editor works on a copy in your browser and downloads a new file named yourfile-edited.pdf.
What is the file size limit?
The editor has no fixed limit; your device’s memory decides. Compress and Password, which run on our server, stop at 50 MB.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. It works with touch on phones and tablets, though very large PDFs are easier on a computer.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
Not unless you choose Compress or Password. Each asks first, and those copies are deleted automatically, normally within about an hour. Everything else happens in your browser.
Does it support OCR?
Yes, one page at a time, in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Hindi. It reads the words for you to copy or reuse; it doesn’t make the scan itself editable.
Can I convert to Word after editing?
Not yet; PDFCherry has no PDF to Word converter. You can save pages as JPG or PNG, or extract the text.
Can I batch edit multiple PDFs?
No. The editor opens one PDF at a time, though Merge can add other PDFs to the one that is open.
Does it work with XFA forms?
No. XFA is a special form type this editor doesn’t support. Any regular fields can be filled, but the XFA part may not survive saving, so keep your original.
How do I download the edited copy?
Select Save & download, review the checks and before-and-after view, then select Download PDF.
What if the tool crashes on a large PDF?
An unfinished edit is kept in this browser for up to 24 hours, so reopen the editor and continue. If memory keeps running out, close other tabs, use a computer or split the PDF first.
