What Is Rasterize PDF?

Rasterize PDF turns each page into a picture and places it on a page of the same size. The pages look the same, but everything on them — text, vector graphics and form content — becomes part of one image.

That is useful when a PDF shows the wrong fonts or a broken layout in some viewers, when you want a fixed, hard-to-copy copy, or when you need a consistent image-based file. You choose the resolution, colour mode and image format. The text will no longer be searchable, so keep your original if you need it.

When to Use It

  • Fix a PDF that displays with missing or wrong fonts
  • Flatten a complicated layout into a fixed picture
  • Make text harder to select and copy before sharing
  • Prepare an image-based file for a system that cannot read live text
  • Produce a black-and-white version of text pages

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Upload your PDF.

2

Choose the resolution, colour mode and format.

3

Confirm and rasterize.

4

Download the PDF and zoom in to check it.

Tips

  • 150 DPI full colour suits most documents
  • Black and white is the smallest option for text pages
  • The text can no longer be copied or searched — keep your original
  • File too large? Lower the DPI or use Compress PDF
  • To keep text selectable and just flatten forms, use Flatten PDF

Troubleshooting

Problem: The file is much bigger

Solution: Pictures of pages are larger than live text. Lower the DPI, choose grayscale or JPEG, or run Compress PDF afterwards.

Problem: Small text looks fuzzy

Solution: Raise the resolution to 200 or 300 DPI, or choose the lossless format.

Problem: I cannot search the text any more

Solution: That is expected after rasterizing. Use your original for searchable text.

Problem: My file will not upload

Solution: Confirm it is a real PDF under 50 MB. Unlock password-protected files first with Unlock PDF.

Rasterize PDF FAQ

Is rasterizing reversible?

No. Once pages are pictures, the live text cannot be recovered from the new file. Keep your original.

Will it look the same?

Yes, at the resolution you choose. Very small text needs a higher DPI to stay crisp.

What DPI should I use?

150 for reading on screen, 200 to 300 for printing.

Can I rasterize only some pages?

Yes. Choose Custom Pages and list the page numbers or ranges. The other pages are copied through unchanged.

Why is black and white always lossless?

Two-tone images compress very well without loss, and JPEG would add speckles.

Are my files kept?

No. Your uploads and the result are deleted automatically a short time after processing.

Privacy & Security

Your files are handled securely

Uploads are transferred over an encrypted connection and processed in an isolated job folder. Your original files are never modified — the result is always a new, separate file. Files are deleted automatically a short time after processing. For very sensitive documents, read our Privacy Policy.
