Useful Tips
- Page through the preview and compare the page count with what you expect.
- A page that looks blank had content that couldn’t be read. A fresh copy from the sender is the only way to get it back.
- Older viewer still refusing the file? Run it again with Most compatible selected.

Getting started
- Upload the damaged PDF. It’s fine if no preview appears.
- Check the repair settings. The defaults suit most files.
- Confirm, see what was fixed, and download the repaired PDF.
Key concepts
- File header
- The
%PDF-line that starts every PDF. Extra bytes before it confuse many readers. - End-of-file marker
- The
%%EOFline at the end. If it’s missing, the file was usually cut off during a download or copy. - Cross-reference table
- The index that tells a reader where each part of the file is. When it’s broken, the file is rebuilt from the objects themselves.
- Most compatible / Smaller file
- Two ways to save the result: a classic index every reader understands, or compressed object streams that make the file smaller.
- Your original
- It is never changed.
Tips & shortcuts
- Password-protected files need unlocking first with Unlock PDF.
- If repair fails, the damage is too severe for any PDF library. Ask for a fresh copy of the file.
- Enter confirms · Esc closes a dialog · ? opens this panel.
Did you know? Switching to another tool in the sidebar carries your file over automatically — no need to re-upload.

What Is Repair PDF?
Repair PDF fixes a damaged or malformed PDF so it opens cleanly again. First it checks the parts of the file that most often break: the %PDF- header, the %%EOF end-of-file marker and the cross-reference table that tells a reader where everything is. Then it loads the file with a lenient PDF parser that can recover from broken or missing cross-reference tables, malformed trailers, corrupted linearization data and stray bytes around the file, and saves a fresh copy with a valid structure.
Before you get the file, it is reopened on our server to confirm it actually loads, and the result screen lists every check and what was found. If a file is too badly damaged for any PDF library to open, we tell you instead of handing back a broken result.
Why Do PDFs Get Damaged?
Usually for ordinary reasons: an interrupted download, an email attachment that was cut short, a crashed export, a bad USB transfer, or a file that was never fully written. Typical symptoms are “the file is damaged and could not be repaired”, “there was an error opening this document”, missing or blank pages, or other PDF tools rejecting the file.
What Repairing Gets You
- A rebuilt cross-reference table, trailer and file structure
- A clear report of what was wrong, so you know whether to trust the file
- A file that other PDF tools, such as merge, split and compress, can process reliably
- No desktop software needed
Who Can Use This Tool?
- Anyone whose PDF suddenly won’t open or shows errors
- Students with a scan that stopped opening after a phone transfer
- Office workers with an export that another program rejects
- Anyone with a large manual or report downloaded over a weak connection

Tips for Repairing PDFs
- Try repairing before assuming a file is lost. Many “won’t open” errors are simple structural problems
- Keep the damaged original until you’ve checked the repaired copy
- If the report says the end-of-file marker is missing, the file was cut off. Download it again if you can
- If repair fails, ask the sender to export the file again rather than re-uploading the same broken copy
Troubleshooting
Problem: “This PDF is too damaged to repair automatically”
Solution: The damage is too severe for any PDF library to parse. The file may be badly truncated or not really a PDF. Re-download it, or ask for the original to be exported again.
Problem: Some pages are blank in the repaired file
Solution: Those pages had content that couldn’t be decoded; the report lists them under “Pages with unreadable content”. The data isn’t in the file any more, so only a fresh copy can restore it. Tick “Remove pages whose content is damaged” if you’d rather drop them.
Problem: No preview appears after uploading
Solution: That’s normal for damaged files. Your browser couldn’t read the file, but the repair runs on our server with a more forgiving parser. Carry on and repair it.
Problem: My file won’t upload
Solution: Make sure the file is a PDF under 50 MB. Password-protected files must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.
Problem: An older program still won’t open the repaired file
Solution: Run the repair again with “Most compatible” selected. It writes a classic cross-reference table that every reader supports.
Repair PDF FAQ
Is repairing a PDF really free?
Yes. Repair PDF is completely free, with no sign-up, watermark or hidden limits beyond the file size shown above.
Will this fix any broken PDF?
Not every kind of damage. It fixes structural problems such as broken cross-reference tables, malformed trailers, broken linearization and extra bytes around the file. It can’t bring back content that was never saved, for example in a file cut off part way through a download.
Will repairing remove any content from my PDF?
Not by default. The repair rebuilds the file’s structure without removing pages, text or images on purpose. Pages whose content is damaged are kept unless you choose to remove them.
How do I know the repair worked?
The repaired file is reopened on our server before you download it, and the result screen shows the page count, a page preview and every check that was run.
Can I repair a password-protected PDF?
Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then repair the unlocked copy.
Will my file be kept after processing?
No. Your upload and the repaired file are deleted automatically a short time after processing.
What is the maximum file size?
You can upload PDF files up to 50 MB.
I’m looking for a car repair manual PDF. Is this the right tool?
No. This tool fixes damaged PDF files. To find a vehicle repair manual, use our Chevrolet repair manual finder or Cadillac repair manual finder. If a manual you downloaded won’t open, you can repair it here.
