Change PDF Password Online — Replace an Existing Password (Free & Secure)
Swap the password on a protected PDF for a new one, in one step. Fast, simple and free.
What Is This Tool?
Change PDF Password replaces the password on an already-protected PDF with a new one, in a single pass. Instead of unlocking the file and then protecting it again as two separate steps, you enter the current password once and set a new one — done.
Everything runs on our servers over a secure connection; your files are processed, made available for download, and then automatically deleted a short time later.
Why Change a PDF Password?
Passwords age out — a shared password can leak, an employee with access can leave, or you simply want to rotate credentials on a regularly-shared document. Changing the password keeps the file protected without ever leaving it briefly unprotected on your machine.
Benefits of Changing a PDF Password
- Update an old or leaked password in one step
- Re-check printing, copying, and editing permissions at the same time
- No need to unlock and re-protect as two separate tools
- No desktop software needed
Who Can Use This Tool?
- Businesses rotating passwords on shared confidential files
- IT teams updating credentials after staff turnover
- Anyone who suspects a document's password has leaked
- Accountants and lawyers refreshing recurring client documents
A Few Real-World Examples
- A business can rotate the password on a shared vendor contract after a team member with access leaves the company.
- An IT admin can update the password on a protected policy document as part of a routine security refresh.
- A lawyer can issue a new password for a client file each time it's shared with a different party.
- An accountant can swap out a weak password on a client's financial statement for a stronger one.
Step-by-Step Guide
Upload the password-protected PDF.
Enter the current password and a new one.
Click "Change Password".
Download your PDF protected with the new password.
Customization Options
Current Password — the password that already opens the uploaded file. We need this to remove the old protection before applying the new one.
New Password & Confirm New Password — the password the file will require going forward. Re-entering it avoids typos before processing.
Permissions — control what people can do once the file is open with the new password:
- Allow Printing — check to allow printing, uncheck to disable it.
- Allow Copying Text — check to allow text selection and copy, uncheck to disable it.
- Allow Editing — check to allow editing, uncheck to disable it.
Important: You must know the current password to change it — we can't remove protection from a PDF without it. If you've lost the current password entirely, we have no way to recover or bypass it.
What You'll Get
The output is a new PDF that requires your new password to open — the old password no longer works. Your original file is never changed; changing the password always creates a new, separate copy.
Comparison: Change Password vs. Unlock + Protect
| Approach | Steps | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Change PDF Password | One upload, one download | Swapping an existing password for a new one |

Best Practices
- Store the new password somewhere safe before closing this tab.
- Share the new password through a different channel than the file itself.
- Use a strong password (at least 8 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols).
- Rotate passwords periodically on documents that are shared with several people.
Troubleshooting
Problem: "Incorrect current password" error
Solution: Double-check the current password for typos and extra spaces. If you no longer know it, we have no way to recover or bypass it — passwords are never stored on our servers.
Problem: The file isn't password protected at all
Solution: This tool only replaces an existing password. If your PDF has no password yet, use Protect PDF to add one instead.
Problem: The file won't upload
Solution: Ensure your file is under 50 MB and is a valid PDF. Try a different browser.
Change PDF Password FAQ
Is changing a PDF password really free?
Yes. Change PDF Password is completely free, with no sign-up, watermark, or hidden limits beyond the file size shown above.
Do I need to know the current password?
Yes. We need the current password to open and re-encrypt the file. There's no way to change a password you don't know — if you've lost it, we can't recover or bypass it.
What if my PDF isn't password protected yet?
This tool is for replacing an existing password. If your file has no password, use Protect PDF instead to add one for the first time.
What if I just want to remove the password entirely, not set a new one?
This tool always sets a new password. If you want to remove password protection altogether, use Unlock PDF instead.
Can I change the permissions at the same time?
Yes. When you set a new password you can also choose whether printing, copying, and editing are allowed — these replace whatever permissions the file had before.
Will my file be kept after processing?
No. Both your uploaded file and the result — along with the passwords you entered — are automatically deleted from our servers a short time after processing.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes, Change PDF Password works in any modern mobile or desktop browser — no app required.
Is registration required?
No. You can change a PDF password without creating an account or providing any personal details.
Privacy & Security
Your files are handled securely
All uploads are transferred over an encrypted SSL/TLS connection and processed in an isolated job folder. No one at PDFCherry views, shares, or uses the content of your documents — and most importantly, neither your current nor your new password is ever stored or logged anywhere on our servers.
- Uploaded files are automatically deleted within 30 minutes.
- Processed results are automatically deleted within 1 hour after completion.
- Your original file is never modified — this always produces a new, separate output file; the PDF you uploaded is read, not altered.
